Alex Murdaugh has been compared to Bernie Madoff, Charles Manson and Ted Bundy

The solicitor for Gloria Satterfield’s family – the dead housekeeper in South Carolina whose heirs successfully sued their boss, accused murderer Alex Murdaugh — said Friday Murdaugh is in so much trouble he might be better off dead himself.

“I would never recommend anyone to commit suicide, but in Alex’s case, he has already ruined so many lives and there are so many more to come,” Eric Bland, the Columbia, SC attorney representing the Satterfield family, told The Post.

“This guy left so many victims, family members whose lives he either destroyed and family members he may have killed, that the damage is hard to overstate. All this could drag on for another seven years. Alex is potentially a guy who will go down in history, making the name ‘Murdaugh’ synonymous with Madoff, Manson and Ted Bundy.”

Murdaugh, 54 – a fourth-generation attorney from a powerful legal family – was charged Thursday with two counts of murder and two counts of gun possession in the brutal execution-style deaths of Maggie Murdaugh, 52, and Paul Murdaugh, 22.

His wife and son were gunned down near a family kennel 1,700 hectare hunting area in Islandton, SC with at least two separate weapons — a rifle and a shotgun — on June 7, 2021.

The disgraced attorney was linked to the murders by blood spattered on his clothing along with a video that reportedly took him to the crime scene

That Elder Murdaugh called 911 and desperately told a dispatcher he had returned home to find the bullet-riddled bodies of his wife and son.

He has been in jail in Richland County since October on exponentially mounting financial fraud charges, held on a $7 million bond, beginning with allegations that he stole insurance money from Satterfield’s two sons. He has since been faced with at least 85 counts of $8.4 million in insurance bill fraud, including money allegedly stolen from a young paraplegic man, and already faces 500 years in prison.

Bland said that the only honorable option for Murdaugh, besides suicide, was to clarify everything he knew about the murders of Maggie and Paul, as well as the many financial charges against him.

“The only currency he has is information,” Bland said. “There was no way he did it alone. He might decide, ‘I’m going to provide the information I need to get this out there and finally do some good.’ But he’s such a narcissist – will he think about what that will do to his son and his brothers and cousins?”

Bland told the Post that Curtis was “cousin Eddie” Smith, the man from Walterboro, SC arrested in September 2021 for the alleged shooting of Murdaugh on a rural Hampton Road in a botched and convoluted insurance scam/suicide scam and who was arrested a second time last month on drug and money laundering charges, has given police the names of people Alex Murdaugh sold drugs to.

Bland said Smith allegedly procured drugs for Murdaugh, some or all of which he sold to others. As orders grew, Bland said Smith asked Murdaugh why, and Murdaugh gave names — of people close to him.

“Normally you would make up names when it comes to people who are close to you and love,” Bland said. “But Alex just told Eddie the names.”

Murdaugh’s attorney, Dick Harpootlian, who resides in Columbia, South Carolina, asked prosecutors for a speedy trial after the murder charges were filed last week.

He and Murdaugh’s other attorney, Jim Griffin, issued a statement last week that read, in part:

“Alex wants his family, friends and everyone to know that he had nothing to do with the murders of Maggie and Paul. He loved her more than anything in the world. It was very clear from day one that law enforcement and the attorney general prematurely concluded that Alex was responsible for the murder of his wife and son. But we do know that Alex had no motive for murdering her.”

When reached by the Post on Friday, Harpootlian declined further comment.

“I will speak in the courtroom,” he said.

But some insiders say Harpootlian may well get his client off due to forensic discrepancies and the puzzling fact that two different weapons – a shotgun and a rifle – were used in the murders of Maggie and Paul.

“Harpootlian is cartwheeling,” a source close to the investigation told The Post Friday. “This exam will be short and sweet. Dick H. is her type. He will blind this jury. All he needs is one person who doesn’t go along with a guilty verdict and they will find them. Everyone down there still loves the Murdaughs and owes them one. No way will he be convicted. This test could be in the rearview mirror very quickly.”

Bland said: “I was in court with Dick today and I told him that this is not a winner for him as he represents this outcast. But he sees it differently. He is not seeking an acquittal. He knows he’ll never get 12 people to plead not guilty. He tells the jury that “not guilty” doesn’t mean “innocent.” This means that the state has not fulfilled its burden of proof.”

Residents of rural Hampton and Colleton counties, over which four generations of Murdaughs have ruled both by their law practice and by the local district attorney’s office, are more upset than relieved after news of the murder charges broke last week.

“Everyone in the outside world is crazy about it,” a Hampton resident whose family has lived in the area for generations and knew the Murdaughs well, told The Post on Friday. “They say the Murdaughs have some kind of genetic defect and they camouflage us all with the same brush. Just hold on. People have to slow down. We are a community of 20,000 people. We’re not Alec. We are the same as we have always been.”

The man added that despite the media onslaught, the city and surrounding areas have survived since the killings.

“We’ll still have the Friday night football games in the fall and our pigeon hunts and our barbecues and our big family gatherings. This is us. Nothing will change about that.”

Sandy Smith, the mother of a young gay man from South Carolina – whose Mysterious death 2015 was reopened by SLED the day after The Post published an article about it in mid-June 2021 – said on Friday she was “incredibly relieved” to hear on Thursday that Alex Murdaugh had been formally charged with murder. She hopes it will pave the way to solving Stephen’s murder.

“It’s been a good day in South Carolina and a good week for Stephen,” Smith said. She said a headstone for her son will be unveiled at Gooding Cemetery in Hampton County on Sunday and many are expected to attend the event.

For generations, the Murdaugh family held great power in their city through both their law firm and the local attorney general's office.

The money for the tombstone was raised following stories of Stephen’s murder and the hashtag #StandingforStephen, which went viral on social media. No Murdaugh has been officially linked to the death of Stephen, whose body was found dumped on a country lane, but rumors of family involvement have circulated for years.

“We felt like this was Stephen’s week,” Smith said. “We are optimistic about the future.”
