Batman’s status quo in the DCEU has become increasingly confusing in recent years. Ben Affleck originally took on the hero mantle in three films but has since disappeared from the face of the earth. This is only about to get more puzzling The Lightning brings back Michael Keaton’s ’80s Batman and sets him up to replace Affleck in the future.

After the groundbreaking change in DC’s Speedster flick Keaton was able to land his next on-screen appearance on HBO Max’s bat girl Movie. The older Bruce Wayne is slated to mentor Leslie Grace’s Barbara Gordon and much of the DC Universe in the future, but that all got a lot more complicated.

Has not only bat girl was canceled by the new Warner Bros. Discovery regime, but Keaton is rumored Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom Cameo was replaced by Affleck. While things don’t look good for Keaton’s future in the DCEU, new details have surfaced about the role he would have played bat girl.

Fandango’s Erik Davis and The Wrap’s Umberto Gonzalez recently held one Twitter Sections in which the insiders revealed details about HBO Max bat girl. Their discussion followed the recent “funeral screenings” held at Warner Bros. for the cast and crew of the DC flick following its cancellation.

Gonzalez revealed that one source who saw the final cut was Michael Keaton’s Batman “age appropriate” and “retired” in the film, with his role amounting to a “key cameo as he walks in and out:”

“I at least asked how Keaton was in it and was told he was good. He plays Bruce Wayne/Batman age appropriate, he has white hair when he is Bruce Wayne. And what’s special here is that his Batman is retired. ‘ But of course he shows up to help and advise Barbara Gordon (Leslie Grace). But he doesn’t really play a lot, but he’s there when he’s in and it’s sort of a central cameo when he’s in and out.”

The insider also discussed the quality of batgirl, with the source comparing the film to a “expensive CW pilot:”

“A source of mine said, ‘I’ve seen Batgirl, certainly not the worst superhero movie, but ultimately I understand why they took the right down.’ I asked this person if they could elaborate a little more and was told it’s basically an expensive CW pilot, which is what I’ve heard.”

They went on to comment on how the film plays out “lighter and more comical” with a “Pretty good action set piece at the end”, the running time of 1 hour, 40 minutes is also confirmed:

“It plays like a very expensive CW pilot. It’s not really a strong movie, the tone is just very CW, it lacks depth, it’s lighter and more comic-like, which is odd because Michael Keaton is in it. Finally lighter than his Tim Burton films. Currently it’s about an hour and more than 40 minutes. It’s basically an hour, 40 minute CW pilot. With a pretty good action set piece at the end I’m told. And again, not the worst superhero movie I’ve ever seen.”

Eventually, Gonzalez realized how bat girl Not “Feel like in the cinema” as it was clear the film was “Shot for TV like HBO Max:”

“It was obviously shot for TV, as was HBO Max. So it’s kind of like everything is center screen and I’ve been told it just doesn’t feel cinematic, which they probably could have corrected if they.” took additional photos. But ultimately those in power decided it wasn’t worth the tens of millions it would have cost to do that.”

Will Michael Keaton’s Batman return after The Flash?

Quality is always subjective, but this insider’s comments certainly shed some light on why bat girl was eventually cancelled. With Warner Bros. Discovery seems only interested in moviesthis HBO Max original doesn’t sound like it could have been made theatrical, especially given the comparisons to CW television and a lack of cinematic feel.

Michael Keaton’s Batman is recruited as a retired mentor bat girl should indicate the direction in which DC will take him on future projects if the plan is still that he will return afterwards The Lightning. This concept might sound intriguing to some, but is likely lackluster for most hoping to see a full-fledged Dark Knight fighting crime in Gotham in the DCEU.

But with bat girl canceled and Keaton replaced by Affleck aquaman 2, maybe Warner Bros. is pulling back earlier plans. This theory is particularly evidenced by the underwater sequel follows now The Lightningby this point, Keaton should be in a solid position in Affleck’s replacement.

Even if DC doesn’t choose to keep Keaton as the primary Caped Crusader, that doesn’t mean he can’t return in the future. The elder Bruce Wayne could still step into potential multiversal events and possibly even in live action Batman beyond adjustment in his own universe while coaching young Terry McGinnis.

Only time will tell what the future holds, but for now, Michael Keaton will return as Batman The Lightning, which hits theaters on June 23, 2023.
