Stranger Things Season 5: Everything we know about the upcoming final season

The hit series from Netflix stranger things has come to a reasonably satisfactory conclusion in Season 4. Eventually, the mystery of the Upside Down was revealed and explained, as was Eleven’s bloody experience in the Hawkins lab. In fact, it would have been easy to imagine the entire series ending this last episodeperhaps when Will realized he was still connected to Vecna.

But that’s not how the Duffer brothers play it: There’s still a full season ahead. That could be bad news for the kids preparing to save Hawkins — or what’s left of it. But it’s good news for those of us who just can’t give up on Steve “The Hair” Harrington and the rest of this dedicated crew.

To learn more about Stranger Things Season 4 Volume 2, dive into the easter eggs, links to previous seasons and character arcs for the cast in our in-depth article Episode 8 Summary and Episode 9 season finale synopsis. If you blew season 4, here’s what we know about the upcoming fifth and final season. We will add to this as news is released.

Netflix

When is the final season of Stranger Things coming out?

That’s a bigger mystery than what exactly Erica found under Luca’s bed. There was a year between the first two seasons, and then we had to wait two years for season three and another two years for season four. (That explains why the children grow up so quickly – see our photo gallery to marvel at the differences.) The Duffer brothers to Variety that the wait shouldn’t be that long this time, but they haven’t started filming yet either. So we would estimate a year and a half, which would bring the show to early 2024. (David Harbour, playing Hopper, expects mid-2024.)

What’s the deal with a time jump?

Like I said, the kids are getting older. Millie Bobby Brown, who plays 11, is now 18, and Joe Keery, who plays Steve, is 30. Each season jumped forward a year, which would push the final season back to 1987. But if the show jumped more than a year, the younger kids could be their actual ages — let’s say the show started when they were about to graduate from Hawkins.

The Duffer brothers, the show’s creators, have confirmed a time jump, although they haven’t revealed any details. The problem, however, is that Hawkins is literally on fire by the time we exit season four, so it seems like the kids need to jump right back into action. That’s what the Duffers need to sort out when they reopen their show’s writers’ room.

Fewer settings

Season 4 was pretty muddled, with Hopper and Joyce mostly in Russia, Eleven starting out in California (we still want revenge on roller skate villain Angela) and some of the crew back in Hawkins. The show bounced back and forth between takes fairly smoothly, but the Duffers say it will be Concentrate on keeping everyone in Hawkins together for the last season.

The meaning of Will Byers

The show began way back in season one when Will Byers was kidnapped, and it looks like the focus may be returning to him. says Ross Duffer Will is “a big part and focus” of the final season. It has been speculated that Will tried to tell Mike he was gay in season four, which was a much bigger deal in 1986. And everything Will does is complicated by the fact that he can apparently still sense a connection to Vecna.

Eddy and Max

New character Eddie Munson sacrificed himself in season four, and the Duffers have assured fans the momentous death is real. It’s possible that actor Joseph Quinn might show up in a flashback (although Alexei couldn’t do that), but the character will not be an active part of the final season.

Unlike Max Mayfield, who has been an integral part of the show since the second season. Max ended season four in the hospital as Vecna attempted to kill her in the same horrific, bone-crushing, eye-gouging manner he had killed others before her. She is still alive but not in the best of health and is in a coma. It just doesn’t feel like the Duffers are killing Max – maybe this time warp will help heal her bones (and brain).

Finale will be long again

The fourth season finale lasted more than two hours. The fifth season finale will also, although not quite as long, say the Duffers. But it will be quick. They note that season five will jump right into the action, and joke that the finale will feature “eight endings.” Get ready to block some serious TV time in 2024.

And then a spinoff?

The Duffers teased their fans with a letter, saying: “There are many more exciting stories to tell in the world of Stranger Things; new mysteries, new adventures, new unexpected heroes.”

And they confirmed to Variety that “we have an idea for a spin-off that we’re really excited about.” The creators say they haven’t even revealed the idea to Netflix yet, and they think everyone will be surprised. But they also said that actor Finn Wolfhard, who plays Mike, got the spinoff theme right. So if nobody can get Finn to solve the mystery, we’ll have to wait.
